
Snapshot: 11 Key Statistics & Trends in U.S. Private Equity and Capital Investments
In its “2014 Annual Report, PE Breakdown,” data cruncher PitchBook looked back at the private equity deal environment in recent years and what current trends hold for the future. Following are some of the key statistics and trends that caught our eye.
1). $426 billion
PE dollars invested in 2013 (highest since 2007).
2). 2,124
Number of PE transactions in 2013 – down 14 percent from 2012.
3). 14%
Percent contraction of PE deal flow in 2013. At the same time, PE capital invested was up.
4). 57
Number of portfolio company IPOs in 2013.
5). $50 million
The median deal size for all 2013 PE transactions. While modest, it was at the highest level since 2007.
6). $125 million
The PE median buyout size for 2013. Include add-on deals and the number skyrockets to $180 million.
7). 273
Number of deals closed in healthcare sector. While down from a whopping 316 in 2012, healthcare is one of the few sectors to return to pre-recession levels.
8). $39 billion
PE capital invested in the energy sector in 2013. While down 24 percent overall due to a decline in $1 billion+ deals, activity was up in the middle market and deals up to $1 billion.
9). 54%
Percent increase in capital invested in PE IT deals last year. Communications and networking investments were the shining stars.
10). FLAT
Both the number of PE deals and capital invested in financial services remained flat. However capital market and institution deals rose a whopping 65 percent.
11). 16%
Percent decline in number of B2C PE deals in 2013. Seven out of eight B2C tracked in the PitchBook survey saw deal flow drop.
